Its important to the life of your ride.
Even more so when you run higher dollar parts.
Not because higher dollar parts need more maintenance, they just cost more to replace when you don't maintain them.

Don't let this happen to you:

A Campagnolo Ultra Torque BB/crankset should not look like this
These bearings need replacement, frame cups too
We had to take a mallet to the cranks to get them out of the Serotta Legend Ti frame

Cleaning should be part of your regular maintenance routine.
Don't expect your LBS to do it all for you (at least not for free)
A clean bike is a happy bike.

Miles and miles of sweat, dirt and rain created the corrosion which ate through this Chris King headset resulting in its failure:

Sweat eats parts.
If you are one of the sweaty types, don't forget to clean you bike.
Its relatively easy and can be somewhat enjoyable.
The time you spend on it is rewarded by a better running bike that will last longer

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls:

Heartland Sports Promotions [HSP] is pleased to announce the inaugural cycling and trail running event at Camp Lake of the Woods in Swope Park.
Last winter the Earth Riders Trails Association [ERTA] and their board members, architects and builders of the trail Scott Capstack and Craig Stoeltzing, opened 1.5 miles of singletrack to the public, since then the trail has expanded to 3.5 miles.

The Kansas City Cup Challenge is fast approaching. This cycling event is the first of what many hope will be a continuing tradition of great trail building and showcasing through races in the Kansas City Metro area. Races will include the cyclo-cross season opener, a trail running race, kid’s race, and a traditional cross-country mountain bike race.

Saturday’s festivities begin with the trail run registration at 7:00 a.m. and the trail run start at 8:00 a.m. There will be a 5k and 10k option. Many runners have been using the trail for training and this will be an outstanding time to compare times with fellow runners.

Before the cyclo-cross race start, kids of all ages are welcome to come race their bicycles! The kids’ race will loop around the cyclo-cross course, completing their allotted number of half loops or a loop.

The cyclo-cross race will be a 1.5-mile loop with racers competing on modified road bikes that have bigger, knobby tires for the dirt. Racers will complete as many laps as possible in the allotted time for each category. Cyclo-cross registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue throughout the day so racers may register for their different categories. The race flyer can be found on our website.

The traditional cross-country mountain bike race will take off on Sunday. The beginner, sport, and expert classes will be taking off at different times to accommodate the tight trail. The mountain bike course at Swope is (so far) 3.5 miles of pristine dirt. The trail has technical sections made more so by the exertion of climbing to one of the highest peaks in Swope Park.

To aid in the further completion of singletrack at Swope, many items will be raffled on Saturday and Sunday [proceeds go to ERTA and HSP trail building efforts].

Saturday Chipotle burritos will be available and Sunday ERTA will provide concessions [proceeds go to ERTA and HSP trail building efforts].

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls:

The 9th edition of this epic race is just over one week away. We hope you all have been enjoying this summer; it is prefect prep for the pleasure and pain that this event brings. The dirt festivities occur next Saturday, August 15th, 2009 at Crowder State Park, near Trenton, MO. Doug Long and the Green Hill Trails Association have put in the work to make sure the singletrack is primed and ready for knobby good times. The singletrack will be open for pre-riding the Friday, the 14th. The course will take around an hour to complete.

Rapture in Misery 5k/10k trail run details---->

Registration for the run begins at 9:00am and the race takes off at 10:00am. There will be a short course and a long course.

Rapture in Misery 6hr/12hr mountain bike race specifics---->

1. REGISTRATION: Day of event registration runs from 9:30am till 11:30am.

2. The Race starts promptly at NOON.

3. CAMPING and PIT SET-UP: You will be able to start setting up your PIT AREA/CAMPING AREA starting Friday evening. Please don't be space hogs. The PIT AREA/CAMPING AREA will be marked off. Set-up your area within these markings. We will have volunteers assisting you in your location. Camping will be available after the event on Saturday night. So come prepared to hang out under the stars. The park Gates will close at NOON on Sunday.

4. WATER: Your best bet is always to bring your own water. But in the event that you don't, we will have some water available on site. Earth Riders Trail Association [ERTA] will be running a concession stand.

5. LEMANS STYLE START: The Race will start with a Le-Mans style run. Yup, the first member of each team will HAVE to do a short run before they hop on their bikes.

6. In addition to prizes awarded to the top three in each class we are offering up some supa sweet swag for the following:

1: Fastest Overall lap

2: Fastest Night lap

3: Fastest Women's Lap

The 4 man team of Craig, Cameron (BikeSource employees), Jason, and Travis (BikeSource friends/customers) dominated the 24 Hours of Nine Mile in Wausau, Wisconsin over the weekend.
The team, dubbed the Star Spangled Bangers, cranked out 22 laps in the 24 hours time.
One lap more than 2ND place.

Cancellara is Back The Saxo Bank sprinter wins big at the Tour de Suisse after a blazing fast time trial on his “Project Black” bike

Fabian Cancellara (Specialized bikes) returned dramatically to the winner’s circle Sunday with a dominant victory in the final time trial on his “Project Black” TTR time trial machine. With minutes to spare ahead of the competition, Cancellara’s TT performance secured him the overall title at the 73rd Tour de Suisse.

The Olympic time trial champion delivered the double-punch in his hometown of Bern on the final day of the nine-stage ProTour event, taking 1:27 out of archrival Tony Martin to win the 39km race against the clock.

That victory catapulted the big Swiss time machine into overall victory, more than two minutes clear of runner-up Martin and 2:24 ahead of defending champion Roman Kreuziger.

“It was fantastic to win on home roads today. I must admit I had good bumps on the course, and I could feel the support of the fans,” a happy Cancellara said. “When I started the Tour de Suisse, I didn’t dream of the possibility of overall victory.”

The hometown victory will serve as a huge confidence boost for the 28-year-old Cancellara, who struggled through much of the 2009 season.

After winning the opening prologue in his first race of the year at the Tour of California back in February, the usually prolific Cancellara went winless due to illness, poor form and crashes.

But he kept working and patiently waited for his health to recovery. He rode through two weeks of the Giro d’Italia in May to prepare for the Swiss tour and July’s Tour.

That patience paid off huge dividends, as Cancellara came into his home tour at the Tour de Suisse in his best form since he roared through Beijing, winning a bronze medal in the road race and striking gold in the time trial.

Cancellara won the opening time trial stage in Liechtenstein to claim the leader’s jersey and then hung tough through the grueling Swiss Alps, staying within striking distance of his most dangerous rivals, all the while keeping in the back of his mind the final-day time trial in his hometown of Bern.

“It’s been a fantastic week for me and for the team,” Cancellara said. “I would like to thank the team, the fans and the sponsors for their support, and we could not wish for a better prelude to the Tour.”

With two stage victories and the overall, Cancellara also wins the points jersey and Saxo Bank takes home the team’s prize in what was a very solid performance for Bjarne’s Army.

Cancellara’s return to the winner’s podium comes just in time for the Tour de France, which starts July 4 in Monaco. More information will be available at the Tour regarding Fabian’s “Project Black” TT bike.
